No one wants a flakey friend!

Are itchy, white-flaked specks in your hair flushing those #newyearnewme hair goals straight down the drain? Unfortunately, this scalp condition, more commonly known as Dandruff, is an issue that affects roughly 50% of the adult population. That stat looks MAJOR, we know, but don’t fret! Treatment options are plentiful! Keep reading and we’ll soothe your itchy scalp in no-time!
First things, first. What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is a skin issue that affects the scalp. The most common form of this condition causes a dry, itchy scalp that produces small white, scale-like, flecks of dead skin to come away from the scalp and scatter through your hair like a tiny colony of ants #EEEK!
What causes Dandruff?
Like most skin conditions, there is a range of reasons why anyone will be affected by dandruff. The top five causes of dandruff in adults are:
- Irritated, oily skin.
- Not shampooing enough.
- Dry skin.
- Sensitivity to hair care products (contact dermatitis).
- Other skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema.

How to Treat Dandruff?
Now for the fun stuff! Ladies and Gents (because dandruff doesn’t discriminate) it’s time to put your lab coats and goggles on because we’re about to put those pesky flakes to the test.

 1. Up Your Intake of Omega-3s
It’s no secret that Omega-3s are vital for overall health. As most sources of omega-3 are found in oil-rich food, it makes sense that a lack of these nutrients can lead to dry skin and hair.  
Now knowing that a dry scalp is the main offender to a dandruff crime-scene, an uptake of omega-3s has been proven to aid in dandruff reduction. Get your daily dose of essential omega-3 fatty acids from foods such as salmon, trout, walnuts, chia seeds and avocados!

2. Nourish with coconut oil
Not only amazing for cooking, coconut oil can also be used as an easy DIY hair mask, with the bonus of treating dandruff infested scalps! The vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish and soothe dry skin - a must when targeting dandruff!
Simply douse your hair, root to end, in coconut oil and leave for a minimum of ten minutes (you’ll get best results from an overnight treatment) and rinse. Follow with an anti-dandruff formulated shampoo and conditioner for the ultimate dandruff Bootcamp!
3. Use an Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner
This step is the easiest and most scientifically proven way to reduce and even wave adios to dandruff for good! Seeing as dandruff is such a common condition, there are so many products on the market created for the sole purpose of targeting your dry scalp, nourishing it back to good health, dandruff-free!
But be wary… not all dandruff products are created equally! Conventional supermarket anti-dandruff products are often pumped full of sulphates and ‘filler’ ingredients that mask the effects of dandruff initially but can lead to an even drier scalp down the line (promoting even more dandruff!)
Invest in high-quality dandruff targeted shampoo and conditioners, made with minimal ingredients, that are natural and proven to target dry skin. Ingredients such as Peppermint Oil, Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Rosemary and Argan Oil are all known for their nourishing, flake-fighting properties and should be looked for in an anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner.
Another key ingredient to look for in anti-dandruff products is Zinc Pyrithione. Zinc Pyrithione is the number one ingredient proven to actively target any skin or scalp irritants. This is because it has fungistatic and bacteriostatic properties. Seeing as we know this is a major cause of Dandruff, put two and two together and you’ve created a solution to you (very itchy) problem.
