Why does my hair feel dry?

Why does my hair feel dry? I’ve been using a tonne of different products, but my strands are still crispy and hard! Will my hair ever be soft again?

Sadly, the BB team hear these sentiments all too often, and it breaks our hearts! Dry, brittle and porous hair is totally #notavibe. If your hair is resembling more of a haystack as opposed to that of a functioning human, it’s time to get serious about your hair health. 

Not only is dry hair less than favourable to touch, but it is also a sign of a severely malnourished scalp and hair follicles. Keep reading as we lay down our top tips for regaining supple and velvety hair in no time! 

1. Up the fats
If you’re suffering from dry hair, it could be a sign you do not include enough healthy fats in your diet, especially Omega3s. The essential unsaturated fatty acid chains found in Omega3’s are deemed ‘essential’ as they are crucial in maintaining a properly functioning body. However, humans can’t actually produce this nutrient naturally; making it imperative to source from our diets. 

But what does Omega3’s do for the hair? Well, in addition to adding sheen and luster to hair, maintaining decent omega-3 levels in your diet prevents dry, itchy, flaky scalps and is beneficial in reversing hair loss. 

Include healthy sources of Omega3 every day in your diet through foods such as; salmon, mackerel, oysters, eggs, chia seeds, walnuts, and flaxseeds. 

2. Apply oil to the scalp
At the end of the day, whichever way you choose to see it, dry hair is ultimately lacking its natural oils. The scalp usually produces its own essential-oils that transcend into the hair follicles, aiding in supple, smooth locks. However, if you’re not creating enough essential-oils, it’s worth investing in a weekly hair mask to replace the oil that is missing. 

Aim to find a weekly hair treatment that is jam-packed full of natural oils, proven to aid in hair shine and moisture. Argan, Abyssinian, macadamia, castor, jojoba and walnut oil are all fantastic oils that are profoundly nutritious and help contribute to a healthy scalp. 

What’s even better is that hair masks require no extra effort to work into your hair care routine. Simply use once a week after shampooing (in place of conditioner), leave on for at least 15 minutes; enough time for the natural-oils to sink into the scalp. Rinse like usual and say hello to super-soft strands!

3. Add a daily serum
Add an extra boost of moisture to your strands every day by applying a hair serum before styling. A serum is a concentrated formula, providing a potent shot of nutrients and oil to the area of application. When used daily (applied to the ends of hair), serums can aid in sealing the cuticles and repairing split ends by up to 90%. 

We also just want to put it out there that you should be wary of some serums on the market, especially if they contain silicones. Silicones are an unnatural ingredient used in hair serums to eliminate frizz. However, to do this, silicones actually prevent moisture from penetrating the hair shaft; so if you are suffering from already dry hair, this common ingredient should ring some serious alarm bells! 

4. Always protect before applying heat
It’s no secret that heat styling hair (straightening, curling, etc.) won’t do any favours in retaining hair’s moisture. We mean, think about it; you’re literally heating and frying hair to stay in place. 

Now, by no means are we saying you must forgo those wave wands, straighteners and curling tongs, but you must protect your strands before even thinking about applying heat to your hair.
